Summary Summary Position
Summary:
Under the direction of a physician or the Medical Director, the Nurse Practitioner (NP) will provide psychiatric care for hospitalized patients.
This includes initial psychiatric evaluations, follow-up visits, history, and psychiatric medication management.
This position includes developing and recording a plan for effective and timely treatment for patients experiencing a variety of psychiatric illnesses.
NP/PA's function as part of an interdisciplinary team including nursing, social work, discharge planners, group facilitators, dietitians and spiritual care.
Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):
Education:
Master's degree with an advanced knowledge of nursing theory and practice, and additional medical training or completion of a board certified Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program.
License/Certification:
Current and valid license as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant by the Maine State Board of Nursing or Maine Board of Licensure in Medicine and qualified to provide health screening, medication and education regarding medication management.
Specific credentialing criteria needed if working in the hospital as defined by Medical Staff by-Laws or certified by the National Commission on the certification of Nurse Practitioners or Physician Assistants.
Experience:
2
years of patient care in an inpatient medical hospital is preferred.
Additional Information Additional Information The inpatient Behavioral Health Unit in Sanford - a 40 bed, locked unit that provides a 24-hour treatment program designed to provide care for adults ages 18-95 in acute psychiatric crisis.
The multidisciplinary team treats individuals experiencing major mental illnesses and addiction related problems.
The program includes voluntary and involuntary levels of care.
A team of mental health professionals plan and work together with the patient to provide psychiatric care, medical treatment, support, referral for follow-up care, and opportunities for learning and emotional growth.
The team includes nursing, psychiatry, social work and case management.
Programming on the mental health unit includes daily clinical groups in CBT and DBT, a therapeutic milieu, art therapy, medication management, and recreational activities.
