Tom's of Maine is seeking a Plant Microbiologist who will be responsible for assisting in implementation of the Micro Control programs that ensure all production meets the requirements of QS 023 - Microbiological Control. The Plant Microbiologist's responsibilities lie with micro laboratory operations, assuring that the testing is done in conformance to Colgate-Palmolive/Tom's of Maine standards and guidelines. The Plant Microbiologist is also responsible for assisting in the development and implementation of the site micro control program in partnership the Microbiology Leader and other functions (Operations & Engineering).
Core
Responsibilities:
Execute the microbiological sampling and testing program for water, raw materials, work-in-process (WIP), environmental samples and finished products at the facility. The plan must be based on QS 023.
Ensure all testing is performed according to corporate methods and policy and adheres to good microbiological practices. This includes support of a laboratory quality assurance system that covers method and material qualification as well as equipment IQ/OQ/PQ, calibration & maintenance.
Understand and use basic laboratory safety equipment and instructions, precautions in handling and disposing of biological materials, in accordance with local environmental regulations.
Ensure that the reporting of data and maintenance of records is documented correctly, that the interpretation of the data is correct and that the results are effectively communicated to appropriate individuals, including management.
In partnership with the Microbiology Leader, Operations & Engineering, implement the plant floor micro control programs based on the Cleaning and Sanitation Guidelines, Control Point Monitoring, Micro Susceptibility Index and Process Validation.
Participate in devising and executing a program of routine problem resolution and continuous improvement.
Participate in microbiology training for laboratory staff and plant floor management and operators. Participate in internal audits and external audits (contract manufacturers & labs, suppliers).
Function as part of the Plant Control Point Monitoring, Quality, & C&S; Teams, and other teams as required.
Interface with Global & Divisional Quality/Microbiology teams to provide input on programs, procedures and methods, and receive guidance & support on implementation of programs.
Additional responsibilities specific to the role:
Backup micro data review, release, and reporting in absence of Microbiology Leader
Support deep dive microbiology projects in the plant
Education and
Experience:
Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology or related major required. Must include significant coursework in Microbiology (at least four courses).
Fundamental knowledge of methods, techniques, and equipment used in a Microbiological laboratory required
Zero to five years' industrial lab experience (Personal Care, Pharmaceutical, Food, or Environmental), or equivalent related laboratory experience required. Exposure to the manufacturing environment both in a lab and with exposure to plant floor micro control programs is preferred.

Understands the linkages and interdependencies between and among supply chain and demand chain Key Performance Indicators.
